These Posts are organized into 55 Departments -- one each for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the Philippines.
Gold Star Post 676 Charter
Gold Star Post 676 of Durand, Illinois, was chartered in 1921. National Commander, John G. Emery, signed it on June 24th. The Department of Illinois Commander, William R. AdjutantII _WRITES 'Anyone who has been by the Post Home recently will have noted the addition of a retired mail box to the front of the building near the flag pole. This box has been made available to citizens of the area who have old flags that need to be disposed of properly. Flags can be dropped into the box any time, and will be disposed of with the proper ceremony by the Legion and/or the Boy Scouts.
We'd like to thank the Auxiliary for sharing the expense of preparing the box for use with us.

Admin _WRITES 'INDIANAPOLIS, January 09, 2004 - As the world rang in the new year 2004, American fighting men and women marked their third consecutive year in harm’s way, fighting terrorism, at home and abroad. Sadly, too many of our nation’s children have lost a parent in this enduring struggle against evil. These parents shall never have the opportunity to see their children through school and into adulthood.
Regrettably, the casualties of war continue.
It behooves all of us as citizens of a grateful nation to say “thank you” in a very meaningful way.
The American Legion has established the American Legacy Scholarship for children of members of America’s Armed Forces who died while on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001.
“We know that meeting the cost of a college education can be difficult for the average household. But, it is a major financial burden for one-parent families,” said John Brieden, national commander of the 2.7 million-member American Legion. “The brave Americans who sacrificed their lives in the battle against terrorism are heroes. We have an obligation to help their children reap the benefits of higher education as they become the future leaders of our nation.”

Admin _WRITES '"While operations in Afghanistan and Iraq continue, more than 100,000 of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen have returned from overseas. As they do, many communities from around our country are paying tribute to the efforts and sacrifices these brave men and women have made in our global war on terrorism."
- General Richard B. Myers, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,
Washington, DC, June 12, 2003

Admin _WRITES 'Dakota, Freeport, Aquin host ceremonies Monday
By Sharon Boehlefeld, The Journal-Standard
DAKOTA -- "Frank Aschiutto .... Ed Barker ... Emmannal Beidler ..."
A line of Dakota High School students advanced to a podium to read the roll of U.S. military veterans who attended a ceremony in their honor Monday morning. Applause started slowly and built as the names of more than three dozen were callled.
The vets sat on one side of the podium while rows of empty chairs framed the other side, haunting reminders of the veterans who served but did not return.
As the roll call ended and Jess Flannagan played taps, the familiar notes echoed through the silent gymnasium.

Sgt-at-Arms _WRITES 'For the third year in a row, Gold Star Post 676 has been invited to instruct the sixth grade class at Dakota Elementary School on flag etiquette. The sixth grade at Dakota is charged with the responsibility of raising and lowering the flag in front of their school building every day. Members of the post demonstrate the correct method of folding the flag along with care and history. Each student is given the opportunity to fold the flag under the watchful eyes of post 676's veterans. Every student will receive a pamphlet on flag etiquette from the American Legion. This year's class is scheduled for September 4th. Pictures are up on this site, take a look.
